Everyone knows that prolonged exposure to heat or cold can ruin fine wine. Few recognize that extreme temperatures for short periods can also ruin wine.
James Laube of Wine Spectator recently wrote in the October 15, 2006 Publication,
“July’s record heat wave had devastating effects throughout the United States, and many wines shipped during those scorching days were among the casualties”...
“On two successive 105° F days, a delivery truck pulled up carrying new release wines. The condition of the bottles and their contents offered a stark lesson in the fragility of wine: Heat is one of its worst enemies.”...
“As the wines were unloaded, it was immediately apparent that the heat had exacted its toll. It had forced some corks from their bottles and had caused leakage around some capsules.”
“I sampled a few of those wines in a blind tasting that week, and they displayed cooked flavors, which exude a stale, oxidized character.”
A comment from a Napa Valley winery worker was included in the article, it read, “It defeats me how many people…..don’t get the potential heat issues…..we are not shipping books from Amazon; wine is breakable, perishable and heavy.”

Is this protection worth the added cost? Probably not for wines in the lower value range. However, if the wine is a collectible and needs protection for its resale value or if it is an expensive wine for enjoyment, it is probably is worthwhile. As an added feature, the wine’s temperature during shipping can be recorded to validate that the care in handling and shipping has been proper. As wine increases in value, documentation for its handling is going to become more and more significant.
